A video composed of digital images sourced from a video game and reinterpreted through artificial intelligence.
In March 2020, the artist had planned a trip to Iceland to continue a photographic project aimed at capturing unseen perspectives of the country. Due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, the trip was canceled. During this time, the artist discovered Death Stranding on PlayStation 4, a game whose landscapes closely resemble those of Iceland. This led to a new phase of the project: capturing in-game photographs using a meticulous photographic process that gave the work a new dimension.
The resulting images—compiled in this video—challenge stereotypical representations of Iceland and play with the ambiguity of an anonymous yet familiar landscape. As digital images, they question both in-game and traditional photography, establishing a space where the two intersect and intertwine.
The project becomes a poetic journey through a fictionalized video game world, probing dichotomies such as space/place, the sensory perceptions we experience while gaming, the boundaries of visual arts, and what artificial intelligence can offer as a creative tool. The original soundtrack is composed by musical artist R Beny.
